Events and author visits…
I visit schools, bookshops, festivals and art colleges to talk about my work. My books are published as children’s books, but I see them as picture books for anyone, so the audience for my talks can be young or old.
Events can be:
reading & drawing (for younger ones), or simple workshops (talking about how to make a book, how I develop an idea, where the inspiration comes from), or full day workshops (developing an idea and looking at visual narrative, with one-on-one consultation on student's work). An event for an adult audience could include advice on how to get your story published and an insight into the publishing process.
My author visit fee is based on the Society of Authors standards plus transport costs.
If you'd like to talk about booking me to speak at your school or at an event, drop me a line or two.
Some reviews of my books can be read here.
A 2017 interview about how I work and a bit of history by Dr Robyn Sheahan-Bright can be read here.
Here's a 'how-to' draw a straight line on The Guardian website.

Book reading at Hurlingham Prep School, London. Nov 16, 2022 (private event)
I will be taking part in the Primrose Hill Art Trail 2022 on July 3 (2-5pm). Local artists put things on display and you can come along and look at it. If you like something you see you can buy it too. So, if you’re in the vicinity, come along and say hello.
I’m speaking (online) at Nottingham Trent University (Illustration and Graphic Design post and undergraduates) on Wednesday 10th March. It’s an informal talk about book design and planning a long-form visual narrative, and generally about making a book: typography, the print process and the publishing process. I’ll also discuss my practice as a freelancer and author of my own books. There’s plenty time to ask questions too. I hope you can join us.
I’ll be at the Kuwait Book Fair speaking in conjunction with the British Council’s Drawing Words Exhibition, which will be on show at the fair. I’ll be talking about my work at the University and then at the fair doing a panel discussion about opportunities and challenges for authors and illustrators. The other panellists are artists Zahra Al Mahdi and Nusaiba Al Munayes . On Friday, I’ll be doing two storytelling sessions at the book fair. I’m looking forward to it, and – more importantly – to the warm weather.
I will be in Athens speaking at the British Council’s Drawing Words Exhibition which is currently touring all over the world. We’ll be at the Athens Concert Hall talking about words and pictures and saying things you want to say with both.
I’m taking part in the Royal Academy’s Festival of Ideas 2nd–6th May – a celebration of creativity, culture and critical thinking. #RAFestofIdeas Lauren Child and I will be speaking about making Lauren’s books on Sunday, May 5th at 10.30am. Lauren is very interesting and you’ll probably be surprised to know how she makes her illustrations and her unusual writing process. And there’ll be the chance to ask questions if you need an answer. I hope you can come and join us in May. I’d take the number 9 bus to Aldwych and get off on Piccadilly outside Cordings, but that’s just me.

I’m doing a live drawing event for the Community Bookstore, Brooklyn, NY on May 5th at about 3pm EST. Philipp from the shop will be reading from The Peterkin Papers, by Lucretia P. Hale, and I’ll be drawing whatever I feel like. What do you do? You can listen with your eyes closed, or watch with your ears shut, or watch and listen, or watch and listen and draw your own pictures too. It’s all very simple.
